According to the marriage register, Mary McPherson came from the parish of Calder According to p. 12 of "For the People's Cause", her son John's autobiography, Mary's father was considered a "gentleman", and Mary was decidedly ill at ease in the comparatively lowly position of being married to the elder John Murdoch. Mary's mother was was the daughter of a family of some substance in the eastern part of Invernessshire. On p. 47 her son, John says, "...my kind, warm-hearted mother had a strain of Highland pride in her composition which she perhaps inherited from her grandfather, the laird of Corribrough [Corrybrough]."
