Ranald MacDonell was born in 1757 in Leek, Inverness-shire, Scotland, son of John McDonell (1707–1782) and Jean Chisholm (1715–>1782).

Ranald died on August 9, 1847 in Cornwall, Stormont, Upper Canada, aged 89.
Ranald was the fourth son of John Macdonell of Leek. He emigrated from Scotland to New York with his extended family in 1773 on the Pearl and settled near Albany, where he was a farmer.
He was one of six hostages taken by the Revolutionary Army in January 1776. He escaped in 1779 and made his way to Canada, where he joined the 2nd Battalion of the King's Royal Regiment of New York. He served for three years and finished as a Lieutenant.
