Mary Lyall was born about 1828 and was baptised in Watten, Caithness, on 20 April 1828.[1]
In 1851 Mary was married and living with her parents on the islands of either Rousay or Egilsay in Orkney. The family were living at Bura Lodge. Her siblings George, Elizabeth, Agnes, Ann and Alice, and her son Charles Stewart, were also recorded in the household. Mary's trade was "spirit dealer's wife". Her husband was not recorded as staying with the family on the census return; given that her son Charles was born in Edinburgh, it is possible that Mary was visiting her parents on holiday.[2]
