The progenitor of all in this country bearing the name Luyster, was Pieter Cornelisz Luyster, who emigrated hither in 1656.

Name

Marriage

  • Peter Cornelis Luyster married Aeltje Tyssen in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1656 when he was 17 years old.[2][3]
  • CONFLICT Jannetje Snedeker ca. 1670 at (prob) Kings County, New York. She was the second wife of Pieter Cornelisz. Luyster. Teunis G. Bergen in his "Register of the Early Settlers of Kings County" (page 197) cites James Riker and says, "Peter Cornelise Luyster, carpenter, the ancestor of the Luyster family, emigrated in 1656 and married 1) Aeltje Tyssen; then about 1670 he married Jannetje, the daughter of Jan Snediker and widow of Reynier Wizzelpennenk. Peter died in 1695."[3][4]

Arrival

  • Peter arrived at New Netherland in 1656.[1][3] [4]

Occupation

  • Peter was a Carpenter by trade.[3].

Flatbush Church Membership

  • Pieter Cornelisz Luyster and Jannetje Jans Snedeker, and Jannetje's daughter, Marretje Pieters {Luyster]) and husband (Pieter Monfoort and Marretje Pieters {Luyster]) were listed as members of the Dutch Reformed Church at Flabush/Midwout, Kings County, New York, between 167?-168?[6].

Death

  • Peter Cornelis Luyster died on December 12, 1695, in Newtown, Queens, New York, when he was 56 years old.[4]
  • Peter Cornelisz. Luyster's death date is confirmed by the published abstract of a record that appears in Liber 5/6 (page 105) of New York wills, "Whereas Peter Cornelisse Luyster lately died intestate, Letters of Administration are granted to his son, Cornelis Luyster. 12 Dec. 1695." The estate settlement of 1681 supports that Jannetje Snediker was indeed married to Pieter Cornelis Luyster. [7]

Estate Settlement of husband Pieter Luyster

1 April 1696 Articles of Agreement "Jonica" widow of Peter Luyster of "poor bowery" in Newtown and Cornelius and John Luyster, she releases her right to property formerly occupied by the Deacons and Officers of the Dutch Church and later in her husband's possession. They are to support her...after her death property to be divided. Persons named Hendrick Claasen, John Luyster, Stephen Johnson, Stephen Alberts and his sisters. [8]

...to son of Jan Stevense, a negro boy. [9]

Research Notes

  1. CONFLICT Place of Birth: Some researchers and publications show Peter's birth as Netherland or Holland, while others show Rhineland, Germany or Holland, Cologne, Rhineland, Germany and others Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1639, Germany did not exist. Prior to 1874 all this area was part of the Holy Roman Empire in individual states. Parts of the Netherlands, Belgium. France and Luxemburgh were in an area called the Rhineland. This could be reason for the name "Holland, Cologne, Rhineland, Germany". The family did originally come from the Cologne area of the Rhineland. I prefer to use "Cologne, Rheinland"as shown on this profile.[Van Riper=81|Arthur Van Riper Jr][10]
  2. CONFLICT Marriage: Jannetje Snedeker ca. 1670 at (prob) Kings County, New York. She was the second wife of Pieter Cornelisz. Luyster. Peter died in 1695, so his marriage in 1670 is very improbable, unless everyone has the DoD incorrect.

Thank you for your brilliant research, it is much appreciated. I believe people often use modern place names so that they might better locate them on today's maps. Dichotomy of historically correct mapping or facilitated cognition and comprehension.
