Biography

John Lock was born on the 16th of December, 1864, and baptised on the 8th of January, 1865.^[1] He was the son of Isaac Lock and Ann Male.

In 1871 the family were living in East Street, Martock. Present were Isaac, age 36, working as an agricultural labourer, Ann, age 25, and five children: William (13), Betsy (11), Isaac (8), john (6), and Rosa (2). The youngest had been born in Stoke-sub-Hamden, Somerset but the others were born in Martock.^[2]

In 1881 there were seven children living at home, the eldest, William, was not present. John was working as a labourer.^[3]

When he was 18, John married his cousin Grace Best at Kingsbury Episcopi on 25 December, 1882.^[4]

In 1891 they were living in East Street, Martock, with their children George (8), William (5), Mary (3), Maud (1), and baby Rose (5 months). John was working as a farm labourer.^[5]
