Biography

Sir Christopher Lister was the son of Laurence Lister and a daughter of Richard Banester, of Brokden. Knighted in 1467/8. He lived at Middop (now spelt Midhope), Yorkshire.

He married Joan Calverley, daughter of Sir William Calverley and Agnes Tempest, at Calverley, Bracewell, Yorkshire, England. By a deed of 20 September 1467 his father granted lands in Pontefract, Houghton, Castleford, Whitwoodmere, and Hoogill in Craven to Christopher Lister and his wife Joan.[1]

Children:

  1. William Lister
  2. Thomas LIster
  3. Nicholas Lister dsp.
  4. Ellyn Lister

In 1480 he was party to an agreement for the marriage of his daughter Ellyn to Roger Nowell.[2]

He died before 17 April 1509, when an Inquisition Post Mortem found that some of his lands had reverted to the Crown.[3] He was buried at Gisburne, Yorkshire, England.

Research Notes

Whitaker's The history and antiquities of the deanery of Craven, in the county of York, p. 35 states has "16 Edw.IV" (1476/7) after Christopher Lister's name and before "=Joan, daughter of Sir William Calverley". As is clear from other entries in the pedigree on this page, where there is no spouse named, but there is a regnal year date after the name, this is NOT the year of marriage: it is probably the year his inheritance was confirmed. In 1480 Christopher Lister was party to a marriage agreement for his daughter Ellyn/Ellen/Elena, so it is very clear that he married well before 1476/7. He must have been married before 20 September 1467 when his father gave him and his wife some of his lands, and, as his daughter Ellyn was old enough to marry in 1480, probably some years before that.
