Thomas Lister, Esq, of Westby, Lancashire, was baptised on 6 November 1569 at Gisburne, Yorkshire, England.

Background

He was the son of Thomas Lister and Alice Hoghton.

Marriage and family

He married Jane Greenacres about 1592 at Lancashire, England.

Death and burial

He died on 6 February 1608 at age 38 at Bracewell, Yorkshire. He was buried at Gisburn.

There was a trial in 1612 in York for the supposed killing of Thomas Lister by witchcraft by a woman named Jennet Preston. She was not convicted for his death.

THOMAS LYSTER, or Lister, the eldest son, of Westby and Arnoldsbigging, living 15 May 1575, when his father, "Thomas Lyster," conveys lease of Gisburne Rectory, Westby Hall, &c., in trust for his " eldest son Thomas Lyster," which deed mentions Thomas Lyster senior's brothers John, William, Anthony, and Edmond, his second son Richard, his " baise son Thomas Lyster," and his debts to " William Lyster of Mydhope" and "Anthony Lyster of Preston" (G.D.). Thomas Lyster and his wife, and Thomas their son, obtained a lease of Gisburne parsonage, rent ^40, fine £4.0, heriot ;^6, 30 May 1594. Thomas Lyster d. 6 Feb. (G.D.) at Brace- well, and was bur. at Gisburne 8 Feb. 1607/8. Admon. (?) 30 April 1 6 10, Inq.p.m. at Preston 12 Jan. 1608/9, and at Skipton 10 Oct. 161 2 (G.D.). He m. about 1592 Jane Greenacres, dau. and heiress of John Greenacres,^ of Worston, Co. Lane, Esq. (son and heir of Thomas Greenacres, Esq., one of the two first members of the borough of Clitheroe, i Eliz.), and by her, who was bur. at Gisburne 20 Feb. 1608, had issue (besides John, d.s.p. ; Francis,^ living 1631, d.s.p.\ Anne, bapt. Gisburne 20 March 1596/7; Mary, bapt. Gis- burne 5 June 1603 ; and Jane, bapt. at Gisburne 22 Sept. 1606, living Dec. 1 631) two elder sons : —

• Thomas Lyster, or Lister, of Westby, of whom presently.

• H. Richard Lyster, or Lister, of Clitheroe, living 20 Dec. 1631,

bur. at Clitheroe 11 Sept. 1670; m. at Gisburne, 31 Jan. 1631/2, Esther Hartley, dau. William Hartley, of Sturtham (" Stirkhouse," P.), near Westby, Esq., bur. at Clitheroe i Jan. 1669/70, and had issue — Charles, John, and Dorothy, mentioned in the will of their uncle Thomas, July 1619, and Jane, bur. at Gisburne 20 Nov. 1635. ^[1]
