David, 27th Earl of Crawford, was also known as the 10th Earl of Balcarres, Lord Balniel, and Baron of Wigan. He turned down the Viceroyship of India to serve as a private in the Medical Corps where he treated up to 1000 patients a day during World War I. In 1921 he was made Knight of the Thistle. David was also a politician and art connoisseur.
David was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. He served as Chancellor of the University of Manchester from 1922 to 1940.[1]
