Nic was baptised on 17 November 1729 in Mevagissey, Cornwall, England.[1] to Ralph Ley and Honour (Tonkin) Ley. [2]
Named after his paternal grandfather, Nicholas Ley, he was the eldest of eleven children. When Nicholas grew up, he worked as a coastguard, an occupation carried on both before and after him. Note however that HM Coastguard brought together the Revenue Cruisers, the Riding Officers and the Preventive Water Guard in 1822. Before that date HM Coastguard did not technically exist.
Nic married An Warren on 21 January 1753 in Mevagissey, Cornwall, England.[3] The couple had eleven children: Nicholas (1753), John (1755), James (1757), Philip (1760), Ralph (1761), Catherine (1762), Sarah (1765), Ann (1767), Mary (1769), Richard (1772) and Jenifer (1773). Nicholas's grandparents had been married in Mevagissey, Cornwall, as was he, and all eleven children were also baptised (and probably born) there.
Nicholas was buried on 15 July 1805 in Mevagissey, Cornwall, England.[4]
