Robert was born in Haddingtonshire and at some point between 1831 and 1832 he moved to Watten, Caithness, with his first wife and their children. Robert is named as the father of Alexander Learmonth (child of Robert Learmonth and Janet Donaldson) who was baptised at the Watten parish kirk on 8 March 1835.[1]
In 1846 Robert Learmonth married his second wife, Catherine Angus, in Stronsay, Orkney.[2]
In 1851 Robert is recorded on the census as living in Housebay, on the island of Stronsay, in Orkney. His trade was "partner in a farm of 1166 acres" (however there are some transcription doubts on the precise description). Living with Robert were his wife Catherine, his elder children John and Margaret by his first wife, Janet, and his younger children with Catherine. A large number of agricultural labourers, all of whom were born in the Orkney Islands, were also living with the family at this time: William Cooper; James Cooper; Eliza Charman; John Elphinston; Anne Shearer; Anne Chalmers; James Miller; William Turfas; David Irvine; Barbara Miller; James Braton; and John Shearer.[3]
