Biography

Ann was born about 1832, and all census data state her home village as Meanwood. No birth record has been found. She was buried there in 1904. In the 1891 UK census, Ann was widowed, working as a 60 yr old charwoman, and living with her daughter Mary Jane and a lodger Albert Jackson in Leeds Emmanuel parish. In the 1901 census she was living on Cemetery St., MJ had married Albert, and Ann, 70 yrs old, was no longer working. She was living on Bentley Lane when she died in 1904 and is buried in the Meanwood CoE church.

Research Notes: Her father John Law was listed as a farmer in Ann's marriage certificate. There is no entry for an Ann Law on Railway St Leeds on the 1851 census, given as her address at the time of her marriage in 1853. In fact, no convincing record places Ann in this region in the 1851 census. The sole record for an Ann Law from Meanwood found so far has a father William. The incumbent also needs to be differentiated from Law-4753, who died nearby in Horsforth as an infant in 1831.

Several Ancestry family trees contain information, without primary source, linking Ann to a father, John, son of Benjamin, a clothier and inventor. A Benjamin Law history page describes that son John, born 1801, as a clothier who went to the US twice, and never returned from his last trip, well before 1830. There is no record that he married. On the basis of current evidence, this disqualifies him as Ann's putative father.
