George Lansbury was born on 21 Feb 1859 in Halesworth, England[1], son of George Lansbury and his wife Ann. He was christened on 13 Mar 1859 in Halesworth, Suffolk, England.[2]
George Lansbury, son of George Lansbury, married Elizabeth Jane Brine, daughter of Isaac Brine, on 29 May 1880 in St Mary, Whitechapel, Middlesex, England. [3]Their children included:
George's wife, Bessie, died in March 1933. Upon her death, he was quoted to say "Our marriage was the best thing to ever happen to me."[4]
He also received a letter from the private secretary to the King upon her death relaying the condolences of the King and Queen to he and his family.[5]
George died on 7 May 1940 in London aged 81.
LANSBURY - WORKED FOR PEACE - DIED PEACEFULLY
"He Was Very Tired at the End"[6]
Mr George Lansbury. M.P., died last night in a London hospital, to which he was admitted, seriously ill, three weeks ago. He was 81.
"Mr Lansbury passed peacefully in his sleep." a friend said. "He was very tired during the day and was not fully conscious."
Mr. Lansbury's, death will necessitate a by-election in the Bow and Bromley Division of Poplar.
Dictators. kings and presidents knew Mr Lansbury, who was Britain's self- appointed 'Ambassador of Peace " and one of the best-loved personalities in British politics.
Mr Lansbury " fought " all his life for peace, and at 76, atter having resigned the presidency of the Parliamentary Labour Party over the question of its support of the policy of sanctions for Italy's invasion of Abyssinia, set cut on a three-years' crusade which was to take him al over the United States and Europe.
Teetotaller and non-smoker, though no killjoy, he was imprisoned twice—first for his activities in the suffrage movement, and later with other members of Poplar Borough Council for refusing to agree to levy rates tor London County Council.
He was First Commissioner of Works under Mr Ramsay MacDonald's administration, and introduced " Lansbury's Lido" which marked the introduction of mixed bathing in the Serpentine at Hyde Park.
Mr Lansbury first entered Parliament in 1910. as M.P. for Bow and Bromley, and in 1931—at the age of 72—after the " crisis " General Election, he took over the leadership of the Parliamentary Labour Party, a little band of 46.
Mr Lansbury, who celebrated his golden wedding or. May 29, 1930, had a family of eight daughters and four sons. many grandchildren and several great-grand-children
