In the 1851 census James Laidlaw (age 8), Scholar, was a inmate in Dalkeith Institution, Dalkeith, Midlothian, Scotland with about 70 others of all ages.[1] Also there was John Laidlaw (6), his brother? And an Agnes Laidlaw (12).

DALKEITH COMBINATION POORHOUSE; Visited 10th February 1856.

"This house stands in a pleasant and convenient situation close to the Eskbank station of the North British Railway, and accommodates the poor of nine parishes, containing an aggregate population of 27,659. It is a two-storied building, consisting of a front and two wings; and, with the additions lately made, is capable of accommodating 124 inmates, including children. The number, on the day of our visit, was 84, of whom 2 males and 10 females were fatuous or insane."[2]

James was a coal miner at his marriage, a papermill worker when his son Richard was born, and later worked again as a coal miner.

James Laidlaw's marriage to Margaret Brotherston was registered in 1868 in the Dalkeith district.[3]

Margaret was 17, a domestic servant, James was 23, a coal miner.
Witnesses at James' wedding were Robert Laidlaw & Annie Laidlaw.
James' parents were Thomson Laidlaw, Hatter, deceased, and Elizabeth Hailstones.
Margaret's parents were Hugh Brotherston, Sergeant 79th Highlanders, deceased, and Isabella Good.
