James was born in 1827. Baptised in the Scottish Highlands on April 13. [1] He was the son of William Laidlaw and Mary Scott. James was killed by misadventure in 1853. [2] [3]
1851 Census of Canada West, Morris Township of Huron County: It is likely that this is the James Laidlaw who was farming with George and William Laidlaw, both a few years older, and who was enumerated as age 22; all were born in Scotland and adherents of the "Free Kirk" of Scotland.[4]
James was married to Rebecca Currie and had one daughter, Mary Jane, before he was killed helping to raise a cabin for James Waldie in Morris Township of Huron County. According to the family history, his body was later moved into a Laidlaw family plot, but there is no gravestone in evidence.
His daughter, Mary Jane, married Joseph Frarey and died at the tender age of 21 years. She is buried in Blyth Union Cemetery, Blyth, Ontario, Canada. Her gravestone stands beside that of her grandmother Mary (Scott) Laidlaw and her Aunt Jane (Laidlaw) Armour.[3] [5]
