John was born about 1835 and that is the year on his grave headstone. He was the son of Robert Laidlaw and Isabella Anderson of Scotland. He married Christina Fraser in 1874 in Fodderty, where he was born. [1].
In the 1841 Census of Scotland John was living, perhaps with family, in Contin, north-west of Inverness in the Scottish highlands. His parents were elsewhere. [2]

In the 1851 Census of Scotland he was living in Achnashen, Contin, County of Ross & Cromarty, with his parents, five servants and two visitors. [3]. Fodderty, where he was born, is five miles from Contin.

The 1881 Scottish Census shows John living in Monkcastle House, Lochbroom, with his family and four servants. All the adults spoke Gaelic. [4].

In the 1891 Census of Canada, John and Christina were enumerated in Qu'Appelle, Assiniboia East on 17th April 1891. John, age 54 (Presbyterian), and Christina, age 41, had many sons: Robert (15), Donald (14), John (13), and James (11). [5]
On page 5, are listed Andrew, who was also born in Scotland, and Walter, Harris and Margaret who were born in the North West Territories. [6]
John died in 1908 in Summerberry, Saskatchewan where he had immigrated with wife Christina and his four sons. [7][8]
