John Kirkland was born about 1705 at Dun, Forfarshire, Scotland [A]. With John’s parents not yet identified currently John is patriarch of a lineage which still bears Kirkland-named descendants residing in Scotland and many others across the world. It is the hope that through further research and WikiTree presence connections can be made to more living descendants. Y-DNA tested descendants of all Kirkland lines are required to determine distinct lineages. For the moment John’s lineage is referred to as ‘John Kirkland (m Jean Lyall) c1705 Brechin’.
‘Nov 20th [1730] Robert Lyall in Pittengardiner gave up the names of John Kirkland in parish of Dun & Jean Lyall his daughter in order to marriage Causa Mere’ (?Were)
Son questionably attributed
James Kirkland, born in 1736 at Avondale (a completely different area of Scotland) was linked as a son to John but no source or other evidence (other than an untraceable(?) Ancestry tree which in itself is not a source) has been provided to support this link. There is a James, born to John & Jean & baptised at Dun. As no further information is known about the ‘Dun’ James it’s possible this is the same James who married Jean Struthers in Avondale. Unfortunately no clarity has been found to support either a positive or negative conclusion. Until positive evidence can be found the James Kirkland originally attached as a son to this Dun couple has been detached.
Occupation & Location
In 1731 John is recorded as being a farmer at Brucemill, a farm just a few miles north-east of Bridge of Dun. [2].
A. No parish record has been found for John. The estimate of John’s DoB is based on his wife Jean's date of baptism which was 4 July 1708. This assumes a husband’s common 2 years or so seniority in age. His place of birth is very likely to be around or about the Bridge of Dun area lying between Brechin and Montrose. This is based on the earliest recorded location of John (in the parish record of his Fordoun marriage), in which he is recorded as being in the ‘parish of Dun’. An examination of the indexed entries of Scotland’s People shows a maximum of 3 possible canditates to be this John. Of those the closest match is the John born in Dundee in 1702 to David Kirkland & Katherine Constable. However John’s choice of family names doesn’t match to his parents being a David & a Katherine, which leaves us with not even that slim reason to select them.
This person was created through the import of PEARSON_2011-03-09_01_01.ged on 09 March 2011. Further data was included in the gedcom. Further manual additions have been made by Alan Runciman, a 6th Gt-Grandson of John’s. Alan’s mother’s maiden name is Kirkland.

↑ No record of John’s death or burial has been found in church records of the day. The closest that can be determined is that it would be sometime ‘after 1749’, the year of birth of John’s youngest son, William

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships.
It is likely that these
autosomal DNA
test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
1 There is only 1 James K baptised in Avondale in period 1730-1740 (1737). His parents are William Kirkland & Jean Thomson.
2 As John K & Jean Lyall have many children baptised in Dun throughout 1730/1740s its not credible there is one born in Avondale.
3 They have a son James born Dun in 1736 for whom no further facts following his baptism are known. So, perhaps unlikely, its possible that this James does indeed marry in Avondale.
4 However, the marriage record of James K & Jean Struthers gives no details of the couple to either support or reject this James is the son of John K & Jean Lyall. It says only [1761] March 1st James Kirkland and Jean Struthers.
Yes, Roy, Ive looked on SP for evidence the James married to Jean Struthers is the son of John K & Jean Lyall.
I have been in contact with Pearson Pearson and discussed the background. We agree there seems no valid basis for the link and if Im not able to find to the contrary we should remove the father/son relationship. As this pre-dates statutory registration and censuses without confirming parish records its unlikely a link will ever be proven but if so the relationship can be reinstated, presumably with amended birth details.
