I'm very interested in finding cousins and collaborating with them and other genealogists about my ancestors. I did my Ancestry DNA test in 2017, I'm also on 23 & Me and did my mtDNA on FamilyTreeDNA. Those results are here on WikiTree.

Biography

I started my ancestry journey about 5 years ago when a cousin gifted me an Ancestry DNA kit. I then bought a kit for my father. When our results came back, I found that my father, nor I, have any Kirkendall DNA! My father never knew his father...I'd always heard that he died either before my father was born or just after. Well, as it turns out, his "father" listed on his birth certificate (Calvin Leroy/Roy Kirkendall) was killed in an auto accident 44 weeks before my father was born. He had been married to my grandmother and they had 2 other children. I'm not sure if she was having an affair, or was a grieving widow seeking comfort, or forced...all I know is, she got pregnant after her husband was killed. So, it became my mission to find out who my biological grandfather was! On Ancestry, my dad and I had a couple of VERY close matches (I've talked to and met 2 of my new cousins) :)) and a whole lot of matches I'd never heard of! I had my bio-grandfather narrowed down to 3 men (two brothers or their father)! I contacted a genealogist to help me in my research...he was able to confirm one of the brothers, Thomas Woodruff Daniel. My Dad passed before I found out who he was. I'm not sure I would've told him anyway. Sorry for such a detailed bio...but, it's my story!

Hi Theresa,

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

PS Tags (names in green boxes) are clickable links to a page of other people who have that tag and links to resources. They also control the activity which is included in the weekly emails from WikiTree. To get the best results, add separate tags for each surname and spelling variation of interest on your Followed Tags page. The " HADAWAYHATAWAY" tag you have won't work as is. You can have up to 20 total and can delete some if you are receiving irrelevant information.

Hi T!

Thank you for adding a GEDCOM. The GEDCOM does not automatically populate your tree. It generates a GEDCOMpare report which you work through, either accepting or rejecting all suggested matches. Once that has been done, you should see [add] buttons for each of the remaining names.

The GEDCOMpare process guide has tips on how to use the data in your file most efficiently.

For those using Chrome or Opera browsers, there is a tool that can help with the formatting of profiles which have been created through GEDCOM, so that you can concentrate on the research. You can read more about it in the WikiTree AGC FAQ.

If you have any questions about how WikiTree works, log into WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment. Alternatively, click my name to visit my profile. From there, you can leave a comment, or send a private message.
