Henry Kells born about 1827 in Tomregan, county Cavan, Ulster, Ireland. ^[1]

Henry Kells was an army, corporal serving with the 65th (2nd Yorkshire, North Riding) Regiment of Foot. In 1851, he was posted at the Royal School of Military Engineering, Chatham.

Emigrated to New Zealand with the 65th Regiment of the British Army on the "True Briton" arriving in Wellington on the 17th December 1852 ^[3]

They had 4 children. two born in England, others in New Zealand.

He became a Hotel Keeper in Wellington; his first hotel, The Nelson was on Lambton Quay ^[4] and he was proprietor of the Surprise Hotel in Karori at the time of his death in July 1872. ^[5]

He died aged about 46 on the 29th July 1872 in Wellington, New Zealand ^[6]
