Robert Kay was born in England in 1901.[1] Robert Gilhespie Kay, born July 16, 1901, was baptized at Holy Trinity Church, North Shields August 7, 1901, his parents being William, a tailor, and Mary Jane, of 52 Seymour Street, North Shields.[2]
In the 1911 census Robert (age 9), School, was the son of William Kay in Tynemouth, Northumberland, England.[5]

Robert Gilhespy Kay, aged 16 and born July 16, 1901 in North Shields, Northumberland, England appears in the UK, Royal Air Force Airmen Records, 1918-1940 with a service date of December 27th and a service number 158509. His father William is listed as next of kin.[6]
William Kay of 11 West Percy-road, North Shields passed away December 28, 1925. Probate was granted January 25 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne to Robert Gilhespy Kay, labourer. Effects were £569 7s. 10d.[7]
Robert G. Kay, aged 27, single, and born in Tynemouth, England, appears on a passenger list for the ship Adania arriving in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada from Liverpool, England on March 24, 1929.[8]
In 1931 Robert Gilhespy Kay, employed as a coal mine fireman, was enumerated in a bunkhouse with a group of miners at Foothills Collieries, Foothills, Alberta. His immigration year was recorded as 1929 and his religion as Church of England.[9]
Robert Gillespie Kay and Lily Elizabeth Sirnis were married in the Office of the Registrar in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada on August 21, 1935. Both were then residing in Foothills, Alberta. His occupation was mechanic and she was a teacher. He gave his parents names as William Kay and Mary Huddleston.[10][11]
