Biography

Mary Ewbank was born on 17 November 1783 and baptised on 19 January 1784 at the Fish Street Chapel (Independent) in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England. She was the only daughter of William Ewbank, Esq. of Haram Grange and Cottingham (near Hull), Yorkshire. Her mother was Mary (Masterman) Ewbank, daughter of William Masterman. The baptism record was transcribed incorrectly as "Eubank".[1]

Her father William Ewbank changed his surname to Kay by royal license according to the Will of William Kay of Acomb on 7 June 1798. That will also stated that Mary was to assume the Kay surname upon her father's death (which occurred about August 1842).

At age 26, Mary Ewbank (26) was married on 28 February 1809 in Cottingham, Yorkshire to Ellis Cunliffe, Esq. of Manningham and Farfield Hall, Yorkshire.[2] He was age 35 and this was his 2nd marriage after his first wife of only 3 years, Ruth Myers, died in 1797; she was Elizabeth Lister's daughter and heiress to her uncle Samuel Lister's Manningham estate.[3]

He later was Justice of the Peace (J.P.) and Deputy-Lieutenant (D.L.) for West Riding of Yorkshire, and Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Bradford over three successive elections. From 28 February 1809, her married name became Cunliffe-Lister; then after her father's death in 1842, her married name became Cunliffe-Lister-Kay.

Mary Ewbank appears in the Visitation of England and Wales under the Pedigree of Cunliffe with her marriage to Ellis Cunliffe-Lister-Kay, along with her children and their spouses. It indicates her father was William Ewbank of Cottingham; however, it shows her marriage date to Ellis Cunliffe as 25 February 1809, rather than 28 February as reflected in the marriage source above. It also indicates her death date as 6 March 1844.[4]

Mary and Ellis had the following children:[5]

  1. William Cunliffe Lister, Barrister-at-Law, late M.P. for Bradford, born 13 Dec 1809; baptised 16 Jan 1810 at St Peter, Addingham; died 12 Aug 1841 (age 31)
  2. John Cunliffe Lister, born 17 Dec 1810, assumed the surname of Kay, on the death of his mother in 1844; lived at Farfield Hall, Addingham; died 27 Nov 1902 (age 91)
  3. Mary Cunliffe Lister, born 13 Feb 1812; baptised 6 May 1812 at St Peter in Addingham; married to Joshua Ingham, Esq. of Blake Hall, co. York, J.P.; died 17 Sep 1899 (age 87)
  4. Ellis Cunliffe Lister, born 11 Apr 1813, baptised 20 January 1816 at St Peter in Addingham 9with brother Samuel); died 20 May 1833 (age 20)
  5. Samuel Cunliffe Lister, born 1 Jan 1815; baptised 20 January 1816 at St Peter in Addingham (with brother Ellis); married Anne, daughter of the late John Dearden, Esq., of Hollins Hall, and has children; he lieved at Manningham Hall, and was Justice of the Peace; died 2 Feb 1906 (age 91)
  6. Ann Eliza Cunliffe-Lister, baptised 2 Jan 1817 at St Peter in Addingham; died 15 Feb 1817 (age 1 month)
  7. Thomas Thompson Cunliffe-Lister, born 30 Apr 1821, baptised on 18 December 1821 at St Peter in Addingham (with sister Ann); married Margaret Dearden of Manningham (daughter of John Dearden, Esq. later of Hollins Hall, Halifax) on 22 April 1857 at St Peter (Bradford Cathedral) in Bradford, Yorkshire (he was living in Beamsley, later in Manningham as J.P.); died 1891 (age 70)
  8. Ann Cunliffe Lister-Kay, baptised on 18 December 1821 at St Peter in Addingham (with brother Thomas); she married Richard Gilbert Talbot (1810–1879); died 5 Jul 1902 (age 80)
  9. Harriet Cunliffe Lister, born 13 May 1823; married William Clement Drake Esdaile on 27 August 1846 at St Peter (Bradford Cathedral) in Bradford, Yorkshire; died 9 Feb 1892 (age 69)
  10. Elizabeth Emily Cunliffe Lister, baptised 2 July 1826 at St Peter, Addingham; married (1st) William Vavasour Carter, Esq, of Weston Hall, Yorkshire, who died without children; married (2nd) Col. Lee, of the 15th Hussars

Mary Cunliffe-Lister-Kay died at age 60 on 6 March 1844, according the Burke's Peerage web site (without a source),

Mary Kay of Farfield Hall in Addingham was buried at age 62 on 13 March 1844 at St Peter in Addingham, Yorkshire.[6]

Research Notes

Birth
There is birth information provided on Burke's Peerage web site (without any sources). That indicates Mary Ewbank was born on 12 May 1774 as the only daughter of William Ewbank, Esq. of Haram Grange and Cottingham (near Hull), Yorkshire. However, I am using the birth date of 17 November 1783 from the source record of her baptism at Fish Street Chapel in Hull.

Marriage
Earlier, Debbi Schmitz had added Abel John Kay as a husband, but this is incorrect and no sources seem to back this up, so it has now been removed. Records show Ellis Cunliffe as her only marriage.

Burial
The burial date source of 13 March 1844 is just a week after the death date of 6 March 1844 on the Burke's Peerage web site (without any source), so that seems right; however the death age 62 at her burial would make her birth year about 1782, which is fairly close to the current profile death date of 17 November 1783.

Maybe the Rector simply used Kay for her last name in the burial record. I'm not sure why he would use her maiden name (Kay) and not her full last name at that time, Cunliffe Lister Kay; of course, it's much shorter to write, and Kay was the last surname added from her father's will.
