A Statement from his military file: "On the night of June 5th/6th the enemy shelled No Man's Lane while Lt Kay was out on patrol in front of our position. He was hit, being severely wounded in two places. One large piece of shell penetrated below the right shoulder blade and a smaller piece penetrated above the shoulder blade. He was unconscious when brought in and was immediately dressed and carried to the R.A.P., but he expired before reaching the post".
He was buried by this Unit on June 6th at the La Kreule Cemetery (V.16.B.3.5., Sheet 27), and a battalion cross erected over the grave.
