Alfred was born 8 May 1896, Temuka, NZ. He was the only child of Zacchaeus Kay and Deborah Horsman. [1]

Mr Z. Kay, Temuka, received a telegram from the Hon. James Allen, Minister for Defence, yesterday, stating that he regretted to inform him that a cable had been received reporting that his son, Private A. I. W. Kay, had been admitted to the 24th General Hospital, Etaples, on February 15th, suffering from acute bronchitis. The Minister added his sympathy, and hopes for better news shortly.[3]

Mrs Kay has received a cable saying that Private A. I. W. Kay was transferred to the Base Depot, France, on May 2nd.[4]

Mrs Kay has received word that Private A. I. W. Kay, who was recently reported to be suffering from bronchitis, has recovered and returned to France.[5]

Mr Z. Kay, Temuka, received word on Saturday, that his son, Private A. I. W. Kay, had died of wounds, October 14th. Private Kay left with the 18th Reinforcements and was 21 years of age.[6]
