Margaret Pendleton Kay was born on December 18, 1838 in Anderson, South Carolina, United States, daughter of Charles Kay (1790–1867) and Mary Johnson (1797–1860).

Margaret (17) married Edward Calhoun Welborn (24) (born on August 4, 1831 in Anderson Co., South Carolina; son of Moses Bowen Welborn and Sarah (Halbert) Welborn) on January 10, 1856 in Piercetown, Anderson. Their children were:
