Obituary - The County Press, Lapeer, Michigan Guy A. Joslin, 91, of Harrisville, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at the Lincoln Haven Health Center.
He was born Dec. 1, 1911, in Lapeer County to Corneilus "Neil" and Lura (Butterfield) Joslin.
He grew up on his father's farm near Columbiaville. When he was 12 years old his father broke his leg and Guy left school for most of one year to take care of chores and the planting of the crops. He returned to school until the eighth grade, when he left school for good to help on the farm.
He married Ruth Patrick on April 17, 1935. His father gave him a 40-acre parcel. He farmed the parcel, added another 80 acres across the road, built a house and barns and, in general, improved the farm to its best. He was a farmer and livestock dealer in Columbiaville until 1954, when he moved to Lincoln and purchased the Lincoln Livestock Auction Yards. He and his wife rented a house in Lincoln for the first year they were there. He then bought a farm six miles from Lincoln in Gustin Township at what is known as Killmaster. He retired from the stockyards in 1976 but continued raising feeder cattle on his farm in Killmaster until the 1990s.
He was an honest man, a hard worker and always believed that "a man's word is his contract." He had immense knowledge of livestock and seemed to be able to guess a cow's weight within five pounds and calculate its cost and potential. He was respected by family and community alike. He enjoyed watching the Alcona County youth get involved with 4-H Livestock projects and would weigh their livestock for them. He was greatly honored when they named the new livestock arena "Joslin Arena" after him, in August.
He enjoyed helping his children and grandchildren. He and Ruth enjoyed playing cards and visiting neighbors. Having lived through the Depression of the '30s, he often worried of financial hardships occurring again. He and Ruth lived very frugally and were proud of what they accomplished with their hard work.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth; children, Barbara (Dean) Hosner of Hillman, Walter (Valerie) Joslin of Oxford, Elaine (Mohamed Ahmed) Joslin of Madison Heights and Delores (Raymond W.) Chase of Lincoln; sister, Etta Pearl Slater of Lapeer; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-brothers, Tom Martin and Richard Martin; and brother, Lee Joslin.
