Roy was born in 1933, 2nd of 2 children born to Tobe Jones Sr and Lizzie Mae Jones. His brother was Tobe Jones Jr; and his half-siblings were: Mary Evelyn Spires, John Isaac Spires, Nettie Spires, Ramon Spires, Jimmie Spires, Dollie Spires, Robert Spires, Miranda Spires, Adele Laura Spires, Thomas Spires, Hugh Spires, and Rachel Florence Spires.
