Biography

Sadie (Hull) Shetler was born in Pennsylvania.
Sadie (Hull) Shetler was an Appalachian. See Appalachia Project.

Sarah Hull, known as Sadie, was born on 13 March 1878 in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob Hull and Hyley Hall.

Jacob reported his father was born in Maryland and his mother in Virginia. All in household were born in Pennsylvania.[1]

On 12 December 1896, Sarah C Hull (20) and Harry P Smith (22), laborer, applied for a marriage license in Fayette County, Pennsylvania.[2] This license does not seem to have been returned.

Sarah C Hull and Harry P Smith filed for another marriage license in Monongalia, West Virginia and were married in 1905.[3]

Sarah C Hull married Joseph C Shettler on 5 July 1911 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. According to the marriage record, Sadie was divorced from her previous husband on 29 January 1910 as a result of desertion. [4]

Research Notes

In 1909 Harrison Ples Smith married Florence E Yost so there was some discrepancy as to the marriage and divorce dates, however this would explain a divorce on the grounds of desertion.[10]

The Census records for Sadie in 1900 and 1910, when Sadie was married to Harrison and after the divorce, have not been located. Harrison was located in the 1900 census as a boarder and quarry laborer, and he was remarried in 1909.

Sadie is the mother of Clara Crutchman, but was she married to Allen Crutchman? This would have taken place before two marriage licenses with Harrison Smith. The 1910 census lists a May Cutchman as a niece, living in the household of Sadie's brother, Enoch, born around 1895. In 1850, Celia is the neighbor of Joseph and Sadie. The obituary of Sadie lists one daughter, Cecelia Show. DNA matches through Cecelia confirm a link with Sadie through 3 links. More research needed.

Is Harrison Smith, born 1874, a brother of or related to Emma Amy Smith, born 1856 wife of Sadie's brother, William? Both of their mother's names are Mahala, fathers are shown as James and George. More research needed.
