Biography

Baptised 22 October 1749

Named after his dead sibling.

1769: Jan 29th Mother Margaret Arthur when questioned by Old Cumnock kirk session elders identified William Houston of Underwood (James's brother) in Auchinleck parish as the father of her child.

1769: Feb 26 William Houston "persisted in denying" while Arthur persisted in accusing him of being the child's father. Margaret, when asked for witnesses identified James Houston in Underwood, John Russel in Auchinleck, and Mary Arthur in Cumnock.

1769: 5 March William Houston continued to deny paternity. John Russel a 30 yr old Shoemaker testified that he had been in the house of James Murdoch in Cumnock in company with the said William Houston & Margaret Arthur, and also James Houston elder and younger in Underwood, father and brother of said William Houston some weeks before the child's delivery. Russel said he heard William Houston upon being desired by his father to take with Margaret Arthur's child.

James Houston, aged 24 and married, testified that sometime before the child was delivered he heard William say he would be a clever fellow who could take a maidenhead and got a child at once....etc

"The Session taking the whole affair into consideration are of opinion that there are strong presumptions of guilt against the said William Houston and in the hopes of bringing him to a sense of it they resolved to put an abstract of the whole affair into the hands of Mr Dunn in Auchinleck under whose pastoral care the said Houston lives that by him he may be dealt with to make an ingenious confession."
