Emmett passed October 10 1918 at age 22 in Tampa Florida. He is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans Louisiana.

According to find a grave, Emmett died of double pneumonia to to Continued exposure on th ship Mexoil which wrecked in Tampa Florida after a hurricane stuck and the ship was towed to Tampa. Several other men also died. Emmet was on his third trip and was preparing to take the exam to be an Ensign.
