Biography

Gerrard was born on 4 April1865 in Horwich, Lancashire, England. ^[1] He was the son of Ralph Hope and Harriet Gerrard.

In 1871 Gerrard (age 6) was living with his parents and siblings at Red Row, Horwich. ^[2] In 1881 the family was living near Horwich Junction, Blackrod and Gerrard was apprenticed to a joiner. ^[3]

When Gerrard was 21 he married Rachel Farnworth on 9 October 1886.^[4] They had four children: Alice (1887-1892), Walter, Annie and Florrie.

In 1891 the couple were living at 9 Back Vale Cottages, Blackrod, Lancashire with their son Walter.^[5] By 1901 they had moved to 12 New Brunswick Street, Horwich, now with three children. ^[6] In 1911 the family is recorded at 18 New Brunswick Street, Horwich. ^[7] In 1921 Gerrard and Rachel are at 4 St Annes Road, Horwich, with their two daughters, a son-in-law and a granddaughter.^[8] Gerrard, now a widower, is still at the same address in 1939, together with his widowed daughter Annie.^[9]

Gerrard died in Horwich in 1946. ^[10]

Research Notes

Since Gerrard gave his address as Red Row on his marriage in 1886, it is possible that the 'near Horwich Junction' address used in 1881 is in fact the same as Red Row which was very near to the railway junction.
