Hi Sean,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jan

For most of the last year I have been spending a lot of time doing contract work on my computer, so did not have time for much else. However, I would still like to remain as an Ireland project member. I am a member of the Ireland and South African projects, and have spent slightly more time on the South African project as most of my wife's family are in SA. The biggest problem that I find is the scarcity of info for Irish ancestors before 1900. I mainly spent time on the project in April 2023, when I was between contracts; and probably spent about 20 hours in total during that month. Regards Sean

Hi Sean

Mary's maiden name was Burn, as per the sources on her profile

Could you please amend her Last Name at Birth or add me to her Trusted List so I can make the change myself.

Thanks Steve

Thank you Sean for the baptismal record of https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Theron-385

Much appreciated

Regards Ronel

It's a pleasure, also helped me to fill in more details on my wife's family tree. Wish it was as easy on my tree in Ireland!

Hi again Sean,

I'm so happy to see that you joined the South African Roots Project, and have done the pre-1700, well done! I also noticed that you created George Marthinus Denner, pre-1806 in South Africa is a lot like working on a pre-1700 profile so I'm excited to know that you are as serious about accurate genealogy as I am 😊

This help page here about performing searches on WikiTree is really helpful for wildcards etc. to make searching more effective before creating older profiles. Duplicates create so much work for us because they need to be integrated properly after merges, hence why we try so hard to avoid them.

For finding sources the RootsSearch Tool is an utter blessing. And for finding baptisms, I absolutely love this page here: South African Quick links

If you ever have any questions please don't be shy to give me a shout.

Have a super evening •*¨*.¸.•*⭐️

Hi Pam

I was trying to do a merge when I added George to my wife's side of my family tree; when I finished up creating a duplicate instead! I actually got it right adding the next person.

My biggest problem is getting information on my father's family in Ireland (County Kilkenny area). I have been looking at WIKItree, FamilySearch, Ancestry, Geni, (creating my family tree in all 4), irishgeneology.ie, etc. but coming up with nothing. Now trying to read microfilmed/scanned church registers for Kilkenny parishes in the 1800s!

Regards

Sean

Don't worry Sean, it gets easier with practice. After seven years it still happens to me on occasions too, what's important is that you do the best you can, so thank you for that :)

My gosh, I know what you mean, I have an Irish branch too and because of so many gaps in Irish census, birth and marriage records I fear I'll never work out this branch. There's an Ireland Project, I have been giving some thought to joining so that I can learn more about Irish genealogy and records. Good luck in your search, when you figure out any tricks and tips please do let me know!

Welcome to the South Africa Project Sean, here's a link to the Suid Afrikaanse Portaal where you can find a lot about the project and how it all works explained in Suid Afrikaans (with links to our English help pages as well), hope it helps and wishing you a lot of fun !

Hello Sean,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

We normally suggest that you join a group, but I am delighted to see that my colleague has suggested that you join the South African Roots project. Yay! If that doesn’t catch your eye, or if you would like to poke around a bit more please review the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities.

Please take your time. Accuracy is so much more important than speed on WikiTree. And please add locations, dates, and at least one reliable source to each profile, particularly any pre-1700s profile, before you leave it. (See: Pre-1700 Reliable Sources).

Have questions? Reply to this comment or ask in the comments section of my profile.

 :)

Hi Sean,

I’ve noticed that you have South African Roots like me, may I give you some tips for South African research?

In South African research we have a few quirks and rules ~ a particular one is to please use the correct Country Name as was used at the time of the event. Another one is Name fields on profiles.

Perhaps you would like to join the South African Roots Project? Besides links to sources, there are help pages that might also be useful. Many / most of the South African genealogical lines and profiles of the eigtheenth and seventeenth periods (and earlier) have already been made. Many have also been validated with primary sources. A few handy links:

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing

Pam ~ WikiTree Volunteer

PS Did you know that Tags become clickable links to others researching those names, or places, that you are interested in. They also control what is included in the family activity emails from WikiTree.

Hi Sean

Thank you for upgrading. I am pleased to welcome you as a member of the WikiTree family. Your contributions will go a long way to joining the world’s trees together.

I would suggest starting with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

Please add as much information as you can, with sources, as it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Have fun collaborating on your ancestors
