Biography

George was born in approximately 1812 in Suffolk, England. The 1881 census gives "Little Wratts, Suffolk" as his place of birth; the 1871 census says "Little Malling, Suffolk". Since Malling is not in Suffolk, it seems reasonable to believe that they are referring to Little Wratting, Suffolk.

George married Sarah Hughes on 11 September 1835 in Haverhill, Suffolk, England. ^[1] (Note that his surname is written Heckford in this record.)

The census of 1841 showed the family as living in Little Wratting, Suffolk, England. George and Sarah were living with children Elizabeth (6), Sarah (4) and Frederick (2). ^[2]

By 1861 the family had grown, and had moved to Mill Lane, Kedington, Suffolk (still in the same district of Risbridge). ^[3] George was shown as an agricultural labourer, living with Sarah and their children Elizabeth (26), Frederick (21), Harriet (18), Emma (16), Joseph (13), George (10), William (6) and Henry (3). (The surname is written Hackford in this record.)

In 1871 George and Sarah were to be found in Kedington along with their sons George and William, and also their grandson Frank. ^[4]

By the time we come to 1881, George and Sarah were accompanied only by their grandson Frank. ^[5]

In 1891 George was living on Union Road, Kedington. He was a widower, but at least he still had Frank living with him. ^[6]
