Mary Ann (Herd) Power was born in Bury, Lancashire, England.

Mary Ann Was born at 22 Margaret Street, Woolfold, Bury, Lancashire, England, on November 11, 1868.^[1][2] She was the daughter of James Herd and Alice Smith. she was baptized on April 4, 1869, at The Methodist Brunswick United Methodist Church, Bury.^[3] She was enumerated in the 1871 census ^[4] as a two year old residing with her parents on Bury Road, Tottington Lower End, Lancashire. She was one of four children residing with her parents at 84 Wellington Street, Bury, in 1881.^[5] She was twelve and a "Cotton Weaver".

Mary Ann married James Power in 1888.^[6] The marriage was registered in the first quarter in Bury. Mary Ann and two month old son Percy appeared in the 1891 census ^[7] residing at 4 Walmersley Road, Bury, in the household of her parents James and Alice. Her husband James not at residence. Mary Ann was listed as twenty two, married, and a "Cotton Velvet Weaver".
