OREGON GULCH GOLD MINING COMPANY MSS. The Oregon Gulch Gold Mining Company mss., 1866-1898, are a part of the Baker, Hord, and Hendricks collection and consist of correspondence and business papers of the Oregon Gulch Gold Mining Company, Morris Ravine, Oregon Township, Butte County, California. The company was chartered on May 28, 1866, under the laws of the state of Indiana. The first directors were Abraham Washington Hendricks, Charles A. Ray, Victor King Hendricks, Charles M. Walker and William Wallace with offices in Indianapolis. William C. Hendricks went to California in 1849 or 1850 and became the superintendent of the gold mine. The correspondence, personal and business, is primarily between members of the Hendricks family and other persons concerned with the operation of the mine. Other items include the articles of incorporation, May 28, 1866; day to day report on the operation of the mine, 1873-1876; proceedings of the stockholders meetings, 1873 and 1875; plot of tunnels and shafts at the mine, 1878; plat of the Independent Placer mine in Butte County, California, 1872; topographic map of the region around the mine, 1866; auditor's reports, 1866-1881; balance sheets, 1872-1880; monthly statements, 1876-1883; receipts and invoices, 1866- 1898. Among the bound volumes are a small time book, 1866- 1871; journal, 1866-1880; memorandum book, 1871-1875; registers of stock certificates, 1866-1876, 1879-1880; ledger, 1866-1880; and a letter copybook, 1871-1881. John Ross Browne, the geologist, and George W. North, business associate, are frequently mentioned in the first few years of the company. Correspondents represented in the collection include Elijah S. Alvord, Samuel Swinfin Burdett, Frederick A. W. Davis, Willis Drummond, Abraham Washington Hendricks, John Thompson Hendricks, Thomas Andrews Hendricks, Thomas Pollock Hendricks, Victor King Hendricks, William C. Hendricks, Stephen W. Morgan, John W. Murphy, George Clement Perkins, Thomas W. Reece, Daniel Steward, J. N. Vera and John Haines Warder. There is a small amount of printed material, 1868-1882. The first folder in the collection gives biographical information on the Hendricks family. A master's thesis in the department of History at Indiana University was written in 1955 by Alice Chandler, "Oregon Gulch Gold Mine, California, 1866-1868."
