Biography

William was born at Meadownay, Maybole, Ayrshire on 17th March 1873. He was the son of William Henderson and Anne Semple. ^[1]

In 1881 William was 8 years old and living at Meadownay in the parish of Maybole, Ayrshire with his parents and siblings, Sarah, Lilias, James and Anne, and servants Ellen McDonald and David Gibson. ^[2]

William had no taste for farming and instead initially trained as a telegraph operator. In 1891 he was 18 and lodging at 21 Kemp Place in the St Andrew Parish of Edinburgh. His occupation is listed as 'telegraph learner' ^[3]

His career led him to London and work with the Post Office. In 1901 he was resident at 1901 Brook Road in the registration district of Hackney, London. ^[4]

In 1904 he married Johanna Theresa Margrete Kolg in Lambeth, London. ^[5]

In 1911 William was 38 years old and lived at 24 Baldry Gardens, Streatham SW London. He was a 1st class clerk in a supplimentary establishment secretary's offoce of the General post office. Also present was his wife Greta, children Otto, Gavin and Lilian and a German mother's help. ^[6]

The 1939 England and Wales register lists William living at 31 Rylett Road in the burgh of Hammersmith, London. His date of birth is confirmed as 17th March 1873 and his occupation as deputy principal Clerk in what is possibly the Ministry of Pensions - Retired. Rylett Street seems to have been popular with Government employees as the Minister of Religion lived at Number 27 and another retired ministry of Pensions clerk at Number 29. Also present were his wife Greta and daughter Lilian, here called by her formal name. ^[7]

William passed away in the first quarter of 1951 in the borough of Hammersmith, London. ^[8]
