William L. Hemry was born in June 1838 in Perry County, Ohio. He was the 12th child (of 15) born to John Hemry, Jr., b. Mar. 2, 1798, Loudon Co., Virginia; and his first wife, Eleanor Capper Hemry, b. Feb. 28, 1801, Perry Co., Ohio. The Hemry family had emigrated from Virginia to Ohio in about 1803 and were well settled there as prosperous farmers by 1838. The Cappers were also immigrants to Ohio from Virginia; it's possible the two families knew each other before they each migrated westward. John Hemry, Jr., married "Ellen" Capper on December 7, 1820, in Harrison Co., Ohio. In the 1830s they moved first to Carroll County and then on to Perry County, Ohio, by 1837. [1]
William L. Hemry is described as being approximately 5'8" tall as an adult, with a light complexion, auburn hair and green eyes. On July 24, 1859, in Perry County, he married Caroline Matilda Bone, b: May 14, 1840, Perry Co., Ohio. They had 10 children together:[2]
William Hemry enrolled as a private on August 5, 1861 in Co. A of the 31st Ohio Infantry Volunteers, which was commanded by Lt. John Harbaughs. He was honorably discharged at Atlanta, Georgia, on September 19, 1864. Unfortunately, during the hardships of the Civil War, William contracted a variety of serious medical problems. He would spend the next 25 years fighting to have his service-related medical disabilities recognized by the US Army and receive an appropriate military pension. All during this time he continued to farm his Ohio farm and raise his children with his wife's help.[3]
Finally, on December 1, 1908, William L. Perry died of pleurisy and pneumonia. He died in Tridelphia, Morgan County, Ohio. The next year, his widow was finally awarded a $12 a month Army pension. It would be increased to $20 a month in 1916 and finally to $50 a month in 1926. She died in 1931 still living at the family farm in Morgan County, Ohio. Both are buried at Deerfield Cemetery, Malta, Morgan County, Ohio.[4]
