Biography

Harold Harwood was born in 1874, the son of George Harwood and Alice Marsh. As well as his business activities he also became a physician, playwright, screenwriter and theatre manager.[1][2]

HARWOOD, HAROLD MARSH. Adm. pens. at Trinity, June 18, 1892. [Elder] s. of George, M.P., of Brown!ow Fold, Bolton, Lancs, [and Alice Marsh]. B. Mar. 29, 1874, in Manchester. School, Marlborough College (Mr Bell). Matric. 1892; B.A. 1895; M.B., B.C. and M.A. 1900. At St Thomas's Hospital. House Physician there. Went into business; Managing Director and Chairman of Richard Harwood and Sons, cotton spinners, of Bolton. Chairman of the Fine Cotton Spinners and Doublers' Association, 1940. Served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Capt., R.A.M.C.; in France and Egypt). Lessee of the Ambassador's Theatre, London, 1919-32, producing several successful plays. Dramatic author, Grain of Mustard Seed; The Transit of Venus; Man in Possession; Social Convenience; The Old Folks at Home; London Front; While London Burns, etc. Of Pear Tree Cottage, 11, Melina Place, St John's Wood, London, N.W., in 1944. "In 1918 [Fryniwyd Tennyson Jesse] secretly married H(arold) M(arsh) Harwood (1874-1959), and subsequently worked with him on several plays, including Billeted 1920, The Pelican 1926, and How to be Healthy Though Married 1930, as well as a series of letters of World War II to US friends, collected as London Front 1940 and While London Burns 1942." - Hutchinson's Encyclopedia on line, article on F. He died in 1959.
