Biography

Elizabeth Irene Hanks, better known as Bessie, was born on 19 May 1896 at Telfer Township, North Dakota. Her father, Andrew Jackson Hanks, was 39 years of age, and her mother, Ida Mae Buckley, was 32.

At three months of age, Bessie’s mother passed away. She was then raised by her grandmother, Mrs. George Buckley until she was 11 years old. After that, she was raised by her mother’s sister, Mrs. Kate and Warren Taylor.

She married John Milton Craven 16 Jun 1917 and they built their home on her father’s homestead.

She liked gardening, animals, music, and caring for her family. They had 10 children in 22 years.

In 1930, she was 33 years of age and living in Telfer.

In the 30’s, they lost everything and in 1942, moved to Menoken. They bought land north of McKenzie, N.D.

In 1950, she was 54 years of age and living at Menoken as a homemaker.

They retired in 1961. She died at Menoken, North Dakota on 9 Mar 1977, at the age of 80. She was laid to rest in the Menoken Cemetery.
