Biography

John Thomas Hammond was born John Thomas Hanham on the 1 January 1845 in Thornford, Dorset, England. John was baptised two days later in the town of his birth on the 3rd of January 1845. He is the son of John Hammon or Hammond and Matilda Loader. The family were illiterate as indicated on records signing their names with an X mark. As such determining the original surname is difficult as the family have been referred to under the names Hammon, Hanham, Hannam, and Hammond. He married Betsy Jones 13 Oct 1869 in Beechworth, Victoria Australia.^[1] The marriage was witnessed by his brother Henry Hammond and mother Matilda Hammond formaly Loader (she signed with an X mark). John signed his own name name on the marriage record indicating that unlike his parents John Thomas Hanham was literate and the name used was John Thomas Hammond, Hammond was the surname he used throughout the rest of his life and the name his children are all registered under. He passed away about 1924.
