John George Hancock was born in Pinxton, Derbyshire on 15 October 1857. He was the son of Joseph Hancock. His birth was registered in Mansfield in the fourth quarter of 1857.[1]

At the time of the 1861 England and Wales Census, Joseph, Ruth, John G, Lois, and Infant Hancock were listed as living in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire.[2]

At the time of the 1871 England and Wales Census, Josey, Ruth, John G, Lois, Albert, Allan, Gervis, and Henry Hancock were listed as living in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire.[3]

At the time of the 1881 England and Wales Census, Joseph, Ruth, John G, Lois, Allen, William G, Henry, Ellen A, and Ruth Hancock were listed as living in Pinxton, Nottinghamshire.[4] At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Coal Miner".

John married Mary Hoten. Their marriage was registered in Mansfield in the fourth quarter of 1882.[5]

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales Census, John G, Marys, Lousie, and Frank Hancock were listed as living in Pinxton, Derbyshire in the household of Elizabeth Ball, along with several other people, including Ada Hoten.[6] At the time of the census, John's occupation was listed as "Coal Miners Check Weigher(Em'e".

Hancock worked at a pit as a boy. He formed the Pinxton Branch of the Nottinghamshire Miners' Association. In 1893 he became the General Secretary of the Nottinghamshire Miners' Association. He became a miners agent and the miners association Financial Secretary in 1896.

He was elected as (MP) for Mid Derbyshire at a by-election in July 1909, as a Liberal candidate, sponsored by the Derbyshire Miners Association

In 1909, he was one of a group of Miners Union sponsored Liberal MPs who were instructed by the Miners Federation of Great Britain to take the Labour party whip in the House of Commons and stand at the following election as Labour party candidates. Hancock held the seat at the following General election under his new party label.

Hancock rejoined the Liberals in 1915 and was returned unopposed in the 1918 General Election. He won the Belper seat at the 1922 General Election, but lost in 1923. He did not stand again for Parliament.

He passed away in 1940.
