Biography

Barclay was the son of Daniel Hanbury and Rachel Christy. He was born on 27 July 1840.[1] His birth was registered in the Lambeth district of Surrey in the third quarter of 1840, with his mother's maiden name as Christy[2]

The 1851 census lists Barclay in his parents' household at Bedford Road (in Clapham), Lambeth, Surrey, age 10, born in Clapham.[3][4] The 1861 census lists him there, age 20, born Clapham.[5][6]

The 1871 census lists Barclay as a boarder in the household of William and Martha Rowe at Kingskerswell, Devon, age 30, unmarried, pottery[?] clerk, born Clapham, Surrey.[7][8]

On 14 November 1877 Barclay married Jemima Susannah Tuke, daughter of Robert Tuke of Manchester, Lancashire,[9] at Croydon, Surrey.[10] They had three children:

  • Robert Tuke Hanbury, whose birth was registered at Saffron Walden, Essex in the fourth quarter of 1878,[11] and who was born on 8 September 1878[9]
  • Rachel Irene Hanbury, whose birth was registered at Saffron Walden, Essex in the first quarter of 1881[12] and who was baptised there on 30 March 1881[13]
  • Olive Tuke Hanbury, whose birth was registered at Saffron Walden, Essex in the third quarter of 1883[14] and who was baptised at Saffron Walden, Essex on 8 October 1883[15]

Barclay was born into a Quaker family, but the fact that he had children baptised indicates he left the Quakers.

The 1881 census lists Barclay at Saffron Walden, Essex, age 40, annuitant and [income from] house property, born Clapham, Surrey. Wife Jemima S, 31, born Manchester, Lancashire. Children: Robert T, 2, born Saffron Walden; Rachel I, 3 months, born Saffron Walden. Two servants.[16][17]

The 1891 census lists Barclay at Woburn, Bedfordshire, age 50, living on his own means, born Clapham, Surrey. Wife Susan, 41, born Pendleton, Lancashire. Daughters: Rachel I, 10, born Saffron Walden, Essex; Olive J, 7 or 9 (the image of the census is hard to decipher), born Saffron Walden, Essex. Sister-in-law Mabel Tuke, living on her own means, born Chelsea, London. Two visitors, a governess and four servants.[18]

Probate was granted on Barclay's estate on 28 February 1911, with his death date recorded as 12 November 1910.[19] He was buried at Saffron Walden, Essex. [20]
