Biography of Philip Hobough Hamilton

Philip Hobough Hamilton was born on April 11, 1838, in Pennsylvania, the child of George Hamilton and Martha "Mary" Hobough. His father, George Hamilton was from Scotland. His mother, Martha was born in Pennsylvania. [1]

The 1850 US Census places Phillip with his parents and siblings George, Mary, and Martha. He was 12 and the family resided in Patton twp. Allegheny County, PA. [2]

In 1860 he is still living at home, but is 21 and only he and Martha are still living with the parents. The residence is in Franklin, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, with a post office location of Murrysville. [3]

In 1870 he is living at home with his mother, who is a widow now. His sister Martha is also living with him and working as a housekeeper. An older man named Jacob Hobough also resides with them. He is 76 and I believe he is the brother of Phillip's mother.

He married Mary Jane Lewis in 1872. [4] Mary Jane was the daughter of Josiah Reddish Lewis and Eliza Jane Foight. [5] In the 1880 Census Phillip and his wife Mary are living in Franklin, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. His occupation is listed as grocer. [6] By this time they have four children: George L. (age 8); Blanche N. (age 6); John H. (age 4); and Elizabeth J. (age 1) His mother Martha age 76 is living with him as well as his sister Martha, age 37.

In the next 20 years, several things occur. Phillip's mother passes away and Martha, his sister is also gone. Most of the children that appeared in the 1880 Census have left home with the exception of John who is now 23 in the 1900 Census. Other children are Anna, age 19; Clara age 16; Nelson, age 14; Sadie, age 12; and Robert age 7. They are living in Oak Grove, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. Mary Jane, his wife, has given birth to 9 children and 9 children are still alive! An interesting side note. On the same page of the census, there are three Painter families. This is important because both Elizabeth J and Clara married Andrew Brown Painter. [7] By the next census in 1910, only Phillip and his wife are listed as living in Penn, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. [8] Here is a listing of the children of Phillip and Mary Jane:

Phillip died on November 7, 1915, in Pennsylvania, having lived a long life of 77 years. on his death certificate, he is listed as a farmer. His wife Mary J. Hamilton is the person giving the information. They resided in Pitcairn, PA. His Cause of Death was acute pleurisy and influenza. He also is listed as having had epilepsy. Phillip is buried in Hills Church (now Emmanuel in Export, PA).[17]

In 1900, Phillip H Hamilton was the census taker. His handwriting was so difficult to decipher that years later, the transcription for his son-in-law’s name Painter was misspelled “Panter”.

Twenty years later, Andrew B. Painter was the census enumerator. His handwriting is quite beautiful, each person’s name is written with elegant style and form.
