Biography

Twins, Twins, Twins.
THREE GENERATIONS OF THEM
GOLDEN WEDDING OF
MR. & MRS. THOMAS HALL.
At a splendid gathering just recently held at Fifield to celebrate the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hall, three different families of blood relationship were represented by twins. They were Jack and Mat Dooley, step brothers to Mrs. Hall, and Mrs. Hall's two sons, Charles and Thomas, and Mrs. Les. Mathews' two daughters, Laurel and Ruby.

Many of the old hands of Condobolin will remember Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hall in their younger days. Mrs. Hall was Miss Elizabeth Sullivan, and she came to Condobolin in 1879 and lived with her uncle, the late Mr. Charles Whiley, father of our present well-known townsman. One of her characteristics was that she was an excellent horsewoman— hard to equal. Tom Hall came here in 1881. He kept a butcher's shop opposite the post office, and it may be mentioned that Jack Bright, now one .of Condobolin's wealthiest men (and deservedly so) was then a butcher boy for Mr. Hall. At the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Hall, Charley Whiley and Mrs. J. Bright were present, and it is worthy of note that they were also present at the golden wedding ceremony. They are cousins to Mrs. Hall. Mr. C. H. Leifermann and Mr. Jack Bright were also present at the golden occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Hall had a family of nine, eight of whom are living. They are Billy, Tom, Charley, Jack, Henry, Mrs. Matthews and Mrs. Fisher. For the moment we forget the name of the other one. All were present at the celebration but Henry. All members of the family are in good positions and highly respected. Tom Hall was a fine athlete in his young days, a good runner and particularly good at all kinds of jumping. It must have been a great pleasure to the fine old couple to see so many present at the golden celebration. It was estimated that over seventy sat to the table, while at the dance that followed in the hall, over 200 were present. Among the presentations were those by the sons and daughters comprising a magnificent gold watch (19 jewelled) to Mr. Hall, and a beautiful gold writslet watch (15 jewelled) to Mrs. Hall. There were many other valuable presents.

Rev. Father O'Connor presided at the banquet and the usual toasts were duly honoured.

We offer our congratulations to Mr.and Mrs. Hall.

OBITUARY - THOMAS HALL
The late Thomas Hall, who died at the age of 85, was born at Binalong, where his father had been Sergeant of Police and was one who was instrumental in getting Ben Hall, the notorious bush ranger. Coming to Condobolin over 50 years ago, the late Thomas Hall took up the business of butchery, and had a shop in Bathurst Street. Leaving Condobolin in 1886 he went to Mt Hope and had a butcher's shop there. Selling out after three years, he took employment on Burra station. Whilst, there the mining fever gripped him and he made if one of the many at Platina, near Fifield. Not being as profitable as it should have, mainly due to insufficient price for the platinum, he took employment from Lachlan shire.

He retired from active work about 25 years ago and for the last six years of life had been living with Mrs. Matthews, at "Noorla." He went to Sydney on New Year's Eve to have a holiday with his daughter, Mrs. Fisher. He was then in good health, with the exception of his usual complaint bronchitis. He was ill for ten days and collapsed rather suddenly from heart failure. Tom Hall, as he was so familiarly called, was widely known and highly respected.

In his young days he was a good all round athlete and went to, and took part in, many sporting events throughout the district. He was married in Condobolin, shortly after coming here to, Miss Sebrial Elizabeth Miller. From the union there, were nine children, seven of whom are living. They are William Henry (Glenowra, Trundle), Charles (Sergeant at Fivedock), Thomas Edward (Wollongong), Jack (Sergeant, Burwood), Henry James (Chatswood), Mrs. Fisher (Marrickville), Mrs. L. Matthews ("Noorla," Condobolin). The body was brought to Parkes by train and then to Fifield by hearse. At the graveside the Rev. Father O'Sullivan, of Trundle, and Rev. Father O'Brien, of Condobolin, officiated. The funeral was largely attended and many floral tributes were a feature that betoken the esteem in which deceased had been held.
