Biography

William Hall was the son of Adam Hall and Mary Irving. He was born in Worcester county, Maryland, in 1746. [1][2][3][4]

William married Mary Evans in 1770 in Delaware. [5][6]

He died October, 1798 and his will was proved in March, 1799.

Will

William's will lists the following family members for bequests:

Mary Hall, wife
David Hall, son
Elisabeth Hall, daughter
Sarah Hall, daughter
Hannah Hall, daughter
Adam Hall, son
John Hall, son
William Spencer Hall, son

He seems to have been at particular pains to arrange care for his children Hannah, Adam, and William Spencer.

Regarding Hannah: "… and a home in my house [during] her lifetime, and for my wife to take care of her and her things, and if my wife should die before her for her to have her in the care of some of her friends to do for her."

Regarding Adam: "(my will is) for Adam to have a home and maintenance in it [the house] as long as he lives and to work with David [Hall, his brother] and have half the profit they make on the land and at Adam(‘s) death the land to fall to David and his heirs.

He designates his wife and then his son John to take care of William Spencer Hall: " (to) son John Hall, the other half of my lands when he comes to the age of twenty one years old but not to have but one fourth part of his half as long as his mother lives and for her to keep my son William Spencer Hall as long as she lives and at her death for my son John to take him and for my son Spencer Hall to have a home and maintenance with my son John …

His will manumits two enslaved people upon his death -- Candis [Candace] and her son Mike. Seven other people were left to family members: James, Nehemah [Naomi?], Jacob, Francis, George, Leah, and an illegible girl.
