Biography

According to his marriage record, William was the son of Robert Hall. Based on his marriage date, he may have been born about 1721.[1] (See also Other William Halls).

He, then of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, married first, Penelope Gardiner, also of North Kingstown, daughter of Isaac Gardiner, at South Kingstown (now Narragansett), Rhode Island, on December 2, 1741 ("2d 10m 1741") [Robinson, Gardiners of Narragansett, says "October"]. William had ten children, presumably all with this wife.[1][2][3]

He married second, Elizabeth Coggshall, of East Greenwich, Rhode Island, in North Kingstown on February (August?) 14, 1773.[2][4]

William probably died about 1795, the date of his will.[2]

Children With Penelope Gardiner

The children of William and Penelope (Gardiner) Hall. If the ages of the children of William Hall are given correctly, the last having been born in 1764, and if the second marriage occurred in 1773, it follows, of course, that the children were all by first wife, Penelope. Ten children are mentioned in William's will of 1795. North Kingstown records give seven of them, five of whom are daughters. The order is given according to the will, the eldest generally being mentioned first.[2][3]

  1. Penelope, born November 26, 1745; unmarried when her father died.[2]
  2. Elizabeth, born September 19, 1748; married George Tefft.[2]
  3. Alice, born January 29, 1750; married George Spencer.[2]
  4. Lucy, born February 1, 1753; married, July 9, 1775, Ebenezer Spencer.[2]
  5. Patience, born December 13, 1754; married James Gardiner.[2]
  6. Robert, born January 5, 1757.[2]
  7. William, born October 18, 1758.[2]
  8. Gardiner, born 1760.[2]
  9. Benjamin, born 1762.[2]
  10. Isaac, born 1764, married, November 22, 1789, Susannah Reynolds.[2]

Research Notes

  • Parents: The record for William's first marriage lists him as "of Robert."[1]
  • Other William Halls:
    • Gardiners of Narragansett lists another William Hall, son of Benoni and Elizabeth (Gardiner) Hall, who married Mary Gardiner.[5]
    • William Hall, b. 3 Aug 1723[6]; d. 29 Aug 1796; m. Mary Slocum; res. N. Kingstown.
