Biography

Jesse was born in Pennsylvania in 1824. He was the son of Quakers, William Haines and Ellen M Cheyney. Jesse was named for his grandfather, a teacher and Quaker minister. Jesse’s father was a Chester County farmer, and Jesse followed in his footsteps, farming and raising a family in London Grove Township, Chester, Pennsylvania.

On 22 December 1853, Jesse married Mary Ann Springer, the daughter of Charles Springer and Eliza Mendenhall, who were also of the Quaker faith. Jesse and Mary Ann were married in a Baptist ceremony, so it is possible that they had left the faith. The children of Jesse and Mary Ann were:

• Charles Ellis Haines (1855-1930), m. Ella Bailey Hill;
• Howell Cheyney Haines (1857-1938), m. Ida Elizabeth Mills;
• Willis T Haines (1859-1861)
• Calvin Haines (1861-1928);
• Wilmer J Haines (1865-1925), m. Ella M Cochran; and
• Ella Elizabeth Haines (1867-1951).

Jesse died on his farm located on the “road between Chatham and West Grove”^[1] Chester County, Pennsylvania on 10 May 1890. He died of cancer.
