Obituary
FIVE MEN DIE AT HAWKS NEST
Crushed or drowned as water surged from a bursted (sic) pipe, five men died today in a narrow trench cut through rock at Hawks Nest.
They were testing a 14-foot water pipe laid to carry tons of water to turbines at a huge hydro-electric power project in the New River.
As they worked on narrow "cat-walks" beside the huge pipe, it burst, hurling them against the walls or drowning them in the flood of suddenly released water.
The body of D. W. Haines, 34 years old, of 513 Main Street, Charleston, one of the victims of the accident, was taken to the Owen and Barth undertaking establishment here Thursday night and on Friday arrangements for his funeral were being made.
He is survived by his wife. [1]
