Thomas Haden was born in 1831. The 1861 census confirms that he was a farmer of 21 acres. The 1851 census reveals that this was the former farm of his father, John Haden. His father was a gentleman farmer and was noted as a gentleman in his probate record. They hail from the Haden family of Holywell House. Thomas Haden appears to have relinquished his farm by 1871, unless a mistake was made by the census recorder, which seems probable in light of his death certificate noting that he was a farmer and butcher still at the time of his death. He died in 1879 at only 48 years of age. Earlier in that year, in The Mexborough and Swinton Times of 28 March 1879, Thomas Haden was also described as a gentleman.
