Biography

Nathaniel Gunn Sr is a member of Clan Gunn.

Nathaniel Gunn, son of Jasper [1] and Christian Gunn, was born about 1637 or earlier.

His father, Jasper "Gonn" is found in London enrolled as passenger on the ship Defence on 18 July 1635, bound for New England, accompanied by "Ann" (wife? sister? or?). [2] [There is no doubt that Christian aka Ann (Unknown) was the wife of Jasper Gunn, and most likely the mother of Nathaniel, eldest of six children.] Jasper Gunn settled first at Roxbury, Massachusetts, and removed to Milford, Connecticut by 1641. [2] Jasper moved his family to Hartford, Connecticut by 1648, where he was the town miller and later the town physician. [2]

Nathaniel Gunn, abt 18 years old, married Sarah Day, daughter of Robert and Editha (Stebbins) Day, 17 Nov 1658,[3][1] in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Sarah's step-father, John Maynard, died earlier that autumn, and her mother married Elizur Holyoak and moved from Hartford to Elizur's home in Springfield, Massachusetts, soon after Sarah's wedding. Sarah's brother John remained in Hartford, but her brother Thomas and sister Mary went with their mother to Springfield, where they each married a year later. (see Editha Stebbins)

The couple had several children, only one that lived very long:

  1. Samuel Gunn

Nathaniel's father Jasper was in some kind of a dispute with the town of Hartford about his work as town miller, and was told by the court to resign from the mill on 3 March 1658/9. [2] He was trained as a physician, able to prescribe and take notes on his treatments, and was the only physician in town until late in 1657, when John Winthrop, Jr. arrived. [2]

Jasper Gunn sold nine parcels of his land in Hartford, [up to about 100 acres], 29 Sept. 1659. On 7 Nov 1659 the town of Milford, Connecticut voted to give Jasper Gunn eleven acres providing he settled to live there. [2] He lived at Milford earlier, from about 1641 - 1648, and was returning to old friends and neighbors. [2]

It appears that Nathaniel Gunn moved from Hartford to Branford (which is next to Milford) when his parents moved back to Milford, or soon after. [4]

Nathaniel died at the age of about 23 in 1663 in Branford, New Haven, Connecticut.[1]

This profile shows 3 children born when Nathaniel was under 13: John, Hannah & Thomas and that Thomas's mother was Sabina Hope or Pope, not Sarah Day Kellogg listed here as Nathaniel's wife. I suggest these 3 children be unlinked from Nathaniel as their father unless there is better evidence that he is their father.
