Research Notes

Curran Gunn Pedigree on Nov 24, 1995, lists Thomas Gunn I died in Nottaway Co., VA. He came to Virginia to help guard a settlement. Another CGSNA lists "Thomas Gunn I, 1650 of England died Petersburg, Prince George Co., VA." from a letter written November 6, 1990, to Ilene from Janice Timms Gunn, Chair of CGSNA. Thomas Gunn I is the patriarch of the Thomas Gunn II families, which have branched into lines commonly called "The Northern Gunns," "The Southern Gunns," and "The Missouri Gunns." [6] ---BROKEN LINK

According to family tradition, the Gunn brothers came from Scotland and settled in the United States. Early history of the family in Scotland and the United States can be found in the "The Gunn" by Robert R. Gunn, 1925. (This book is in the Dallas Public Library, not for loan). That book and The Compendium of American Genealogy, Volume 7, page 132 (1942) show our line from immigrant ancestor, Thomass Gunn, born 1650 in England, who settled in what is now Petersburg, Virginia. Notes from Mrs. Virginia Shipley of Knoxville, Tennessee, state that the Thomas Gunn who was born in 1650 was Thomas II, that he was sent to this country with soldiers to protect the settlers from Indians, and that he helped clear the land where Petersburg now is located. If he came here as a soldier he evidently was married after arriving in this country; we have not yet identified his wife. For this record, we are designating the immigrant as Thomas Gunn I. [7]

This profile that Thomas was born when his father Nathaniel was only 13 and that Thomas's mother was Sabina Hope or Pope, not Sarah Day Kellogg listed as Nathaniel's wife in Nathaniel's profile. There may be a different Nathaniel Gunn who was his father but not the one that is linked to here. Also, this Nathaniel settled in Milford, CT, nowhere near VA. I suggest Thomas be unlinked from this Nathaniel as his father unless there is better evidence to show they are related.
