Biography

Donald Gun is a member of Clan Gunn.

Donald Gun was the third son of John Gun Robson.His elder brothers were John, of Kinbrace and then Easterdale, and William who, in 1626, went to fight in the Thirty Year War. William died in 1661, Donald's younger brother, Alexander, died before 1629. There were also two sisters: Christina, who married Alexander Georgeson; and Margaret. Their father , John Gun Robson, died in 1618.

Donald lived at Dalesdale in 1624, Dirlot in 1637, and Westerdale in 1653.

Since his older brother, William, was born in 1603, Donald must have been born after that.

He married a daughter of William Macallistair, from whom his son, Robert John Gunn was "served heir" (declared heir) in 1624, for lands in Lybster and Barrowston.

He died before 26 June, 1659^[1]

Research Notes

Donald or John?

"The Forbears and Descendants of Ingram Gun", pg 9 and 10, (citing "documents quoted by Thomas Sinclair") clearly states that John Gun Robson "III" (died 1618) had 4 sons:

• John of Kinbrace and then Easterdale, had one son "William Mor", after which that line died out
• Sir William, who fought in the Thirty Years War
• Donald (of Daleside, Dirlot, Westerdale) was the father of Robert John Gunn (of Crosskirk), in turn father of Donald Mor
• Alexander, the youngest, died before 1629

"The Gunns" by Thomas Sinclair, 1890, on page 155, says "Donald Gunn in Westerdale was the brother of Sir William Gunn, son of John Gunn (Robson), and Donald's descendants are traceable to this day. He is sometmes called Donald Gunn, Dalemore". Pg 114 - 115 has several references to Donald Gunn, son of "John Gunn, alias Robson", brother of John Gunn, junior, and William, with dates of 1629, 1637, 1645, 1652, 1653, and references to the education of Donald's son.

Further confusing the case, pg 123 says that Robert's (son of the Crowner) second son, John, had a son John (d 1586), father of John Dirlot (d 1618). John of Dirlot's sons were John of Kinbrace, Major General Sir William, and Robert of Lybster, father of John of Crosskirk.

"The History of the Clan Gunn" by Mark Rugg Gunn makes no mention of this Donald. On pg 172, the family tree for the Robson Gunns shows John Gunn Robson "III" having only two sons
